FIRST FRIDAYS in the EXCHANGE was launched on July 2, 2010.
Based on artist Sue Gordon's experience of the First Fridays event in Kansas City, she and artist Karen Schulz introduced the concept to Exchange artists, Galleries and shops, got a great response, and First Fridays is now one of Winnipeg's premier events!
Pre- (and post-) COVID:
On the first Friday of every month, members of the public are invited to tour private artists' studios, art galleries and artist run centres and are encouraged to support Exchange shops and restaurants.
They may attend Art Talk/Art Walk and join a guided tour, or can explore on their own (or -to be rebooted in 2022-using a map that is printed and distributed by the Exchange District BIZ or downloaded from this website)
Our main programming, ART TALK/ART WALK , launched on July 7, 2012, is generously funded by the Winnipeg Arts Council and Manitoba Arts Council.
ART TALK/ART WALK is held on the first Friday of every month (except January), during First Fridays in the Exchange.
Through a series of live interviews featuring local emerging and established artists and arts professionals, ART TALK/ART WALK intends to excite, involve and educate the non-artist public about contemporary art. Running 45 minutes to an hour, the ART TALK is followed by a guided ART WALK to a selection of studios and galleries which are open and participating in First Fridays in the Exchange. The Winnipeg Free Press provides print advertising in kind.
We operate with the $60 membership fees from all our wonderful participating members, and our fundraisers such as The Restaurant Raffle and the 50/50 selling of prints from artists.
Supplementary funding and in kind support is generously provided by The Exchange District BIZ.
