Black Earth/Chornozem: An Installation by Michael Boss

For anyone who has the war in Ukraine on their radar, this heartfelt exhibition must be seen and experienced. Painting, drawing, sculpture and text are used by Boss to express his deeply felt connection to Ukraine and its current situation.

The installation Black Earth is comprised of 7 separate pieces that were produced between 2021 and 2025. The overarching theme is about the ongoing war and the way it engages with Ukrainian history. Elements of Boss's family history are set beside pieces that reflect larger historical aspects that underlie the current unjustifiable invasion of Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine has always occupied a central, strategically significant area located between north and south, east and west on the European continent. Throughout history, the country has been at the crossroads; intersected by trade routes, perhaps since time immemorial. “Ukraina” (literally: the borderlands) also happens to be cloaked in a deep layer of the richest, most fertile soil on the planet, known as “chornozem”. Southern Manitoba is one of the few other areas on the planet that features broad deposits of this very significant natural resource, which is one of the reasons the Boss family ancestors emigrated to the Canadian prairies.

Gallery hours:
January 2-16, Wednesday to Sunday, 12-3
